Howl

Beware of the animation segments that quickly shift from gorgeous/interesting to Beyond the Mind’s Eye…

Network

This is one of those movies that I should have watched a long time ago. The acting is, across the board, fantastic. The subject matter holds just as strong today – 35 years after the initial release of the film. A chilling view into the harsh reality of network television.

Amos and Andrew

We’ve talked for quite some time of an elaborate night called CAGEMATCH. There will be debates, a referee in short shorts, a bust of Nic Cage & all the horrible Cage films one could want. This night will happen…someday.

In the meantime, we decided to see what Cage films were on Netflix instant & chose this one. Netflix said that I would give it a 1.7 rating. Netflix was very generous.

The gist of the movie: White people do this. Black people do that. Shame on everyone involved with this film. Not even enjoyably bad.

Nic Cage to Watch Instead: Raising Arizona, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Wild at Heart

De Lift

The first Horror Movie Night of 2011 brought us a tale of a killer…elevator? Yup, this was some good stuff. Horrible (horribly awesome) dubbing was the highlight of this experience.

Drinking game: drink a beverage of your choice every time you hear the word “chip”.

Watch this with: Dick Maas’ Amsterdamned (mid-year HMN selection that I have yet to see, but it HAS to be good, right?)

Ex Drummer

I missed this movie at Fantastic Fest 2008; I made the right decision at the time. This basic story line follows a punk band made up of “disabled” miscreants (disabilities include a stiff arm & lisp) as they prepare for a battle of the bands-style contest. Some moments are very beautifully executed. Sadly those moments don’t last and are washed away by continual gimmicky editing. The film tries very hard to be pretentious, but doesn’t have the intelligence to deliver.

Street Gang

Also known around my house as “that goddamn Sesame Street book”. I help me with my homework was frustrated, if you can’t tell, that a book on a subject I care about was as difficult to enjoy. This book is DENSE with information. I have not read anything this academic since college. The creation of the show is a fascinating topic & is covered in detail in Street Gang. The downfall is in the narrative structure. The reader is introduced to name after name, with tangential story lines that snake along the pages.

By the end, Names appeared that I could not recall. No doubt there was a lot going on, but it could have been better structured.

Made me want to watch: The Dark Crystal [Blu-ray], The Best of the Electric Company, The Muppet Movie – Kermit’s 50th Anniversary Edition & Sesame Street: Old School, Vol. 1 (1969-1974)
