The Drought

This is my first Ballard book…and I’m not gushing over it. Some moments were fantastic, but other story line/structure choices left me a bit baffled at their detached nature. I may read Crash next (source for the 1996 Cronenberg film Crash, not the heavy-handed LA drama) to give Ballard a second chance.

Pretties

I’m a HUGE fan of Young Adult novels. Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies Series is the origin point of this passion. After being submerged into this dystopian world where everyone is pretty, I definitely wanted more. This is the second book in the series and my favorite.

It is one of those books that feels like home upon additional readings.

Also read: Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset, Uglies (Uglies Trilogy, Book 1), and Leviathan

Street Gang

Also known around my house as “that goddamn Sesame Street book”. I help me with my homework was frustrated, if you can’t tell, that a book on a subject I care about was as difficult to enjoy. This book is DENSE with information. I have not read anything this academic since college. The creation of the show is a fascinating topic & is covered in detail in Street Gang. The downfall is in the narrative structure. The reader is introduced to name after name, with tangential story lines that snake along the pages.

By the end, Names appeared that I could not recall. No doubt there was a lot going on, but it could have been better structured.

Made me want to watch: The Dark Crystal [Blu-ray], The Best of the Electric Company, The Muppet Movie – Kermit’s 50th Anniversary Edition & Sesame Street: Old School, Vol. 1 (1969-1974)

My goal for the year was one book a week, which means I fell a little short with a total of 34. I don’t know if graphic novels like Scott Pilgrim truly count toward a book tally for the year, but I counted them.

I started daily workouts in November & discovered that I can double my reading…that is going to help for 2011!

Most on the list are Young Adult novels, which have become a favorite.

I have stared(*) the books that were read as part of our YA bookclub: YA@Heart (site | twitter | Austin Chronicle Article).

2011 will be the year of 52+ books read.
