Network

This is one of those movies that I should have watched a long time ago. The acting is, across the board, fantastic. The subject matter holds just as strong today – 35 years after the initial release of the film. A chilling view into the harsh reality of network television.

De Lift

The first Horror Movie Night of 2011 brought us a tale of a killer…elevator? Yup, this was some good stuff. Horrible (horribly awesome) dubbing was the highlight of this experience.

Drinking game: drink a beverage of your choice every time you hear the word “chip”.

Watch this with: Dick Maas’ Amsterdamned (mid-year HMN selection that I have yet to see, but it HAS to be good, right?)

Ex Drummer

I missed this movie at Fantastic Fest 2008; I made the right decision at the time. This basic story line follows a punk band made up of “disabled” miscreants (disabilities include a stiff arm & lisp) as they prepare for a battle of the bands-style contest. Some moments are very beautifully executed. Sadly those moments don’t last and are washed away by continual gimmicky editing. The film tries very hard to be pretentious, but doesn’t have the intelligence to deliver.

Winter's Bone

I had missed this at SxSW and during its theatrical release; silly, silly me. This was POWERFUL stuff. Any praise that Jennifer Lawrence gets is well-deserved. 2010 had some seriously tough female leads…this is one of the best. The film feels extremely authentic. I really look forward to seeing Debra Granik’s Down to the Bone very soon.

I do wish that Sam Smith‘s design (above) would have been used for the dvd/blu release.

N-Girls Vs Vampires

This is one of Takashi Miike’s many made-for-tv creations, which can be VERY hit or miss. Released cheapest essay writing service the same year as Dead or Alive and Audition! I liked this overall, but felt that the 3+ hour run time could have easily had the fat trimmed by up to an hour. Some kick-ass girl power moments that I would have loved to see more of.

Marathon Idea: Miike Extreme Primer with Happiness of the Katakari’s, Audition, Dead or Alive & Ichi the Killer
